Our Curriculum Offer
At The Rowan School we let our learning fly, so we can REACH for the sky.
Through a varied and differentiated curriculum we aim to teach learners how to grow into children who achieve their best in school life and excel within the wider community and later into adulthood.
We have a broad and appropriately challenging curriculum as we feel this is key in promoting and sustaining the high achievement of our learners. We recognise and value educational experiences outside the classroom and know that this leads to higher achievement, motivation and personal development of learners. There are regular educational visits to a range of locations such as museums, galleries, theatres and outdoor activity centres. Every opportunity is taken to link new experiences to the children’s learning in order to embed the experiences fully in the curriculum and bring learning to life. Social academic rewards outings give learners the opportunity to practise their skills in external situations with the support and care of our skilled staff team.
We are dedicated to developing our children to become well-rounded citizens who show respect, responsibility for action, and inclusivity, and who celebrate diversity. The development of social skills is promoted though our Enrichment programme where elements such as self-esteem, self-awareness, and cultural awareness are promoted.
Through the delivery of our bespoke curriculum we ensure a consistent approach that supports the need for familiarity, whilst still stretching and challenging individuals appropriately.
Reading Scheme
At our school, we use Lexia Literacy Software to support learners’ reading.
Lexia’s personalised literacy software for schools is designed to provide teachers with effective and scalable solutions which are simple to use.
Lexia supports learners of all ages and abilities in literacy skills development, and has been proven to be effective in over 20 externally reviewed research studies – including an efficacy study by the Education Endowment Foundation.
Transitions to Secondary School
At The Rowan School, we recognise that transition is a process and not an event. We want our children to experience smooth transitions so that the quality of learning is maintained and children continue to make the very best progress. As a whole school, we support children through every transition point, working to ensure that children are happy and confident to move on to the next step in their education.
Children transition from The Rowan School to a number of secondary educational providers including SEN and mainstream, where appropriate. Educational provision is discussed at every annual review and we work alongside parents/carers in the best interests of each child.
Visit our Transitions Page for full information on how children are supported to transition to Secondary School and at each class move.
Community and Charity
The school has a deeply embedded charitable ethos and we involve children in charitable endeavours by working with charities which are close to their hearts.
We also fundraise for national charities, including Children in Need, Comic Relief and Jeans for Genes.
We are passionate about our community and support our local food bank with donations.
